Dental Bonding

Dental bonding, also known as tooth bonding, is a procedure that involves the application of resin whose color is perfectly matched to the existing tooth shade. Tooth bonding is a simple way that dentists use to mask tooth abnormalities and improve the appearance of the teeth. Typically, dental bonding does not require anesthesia unless the dentist is filling a cavity. Also, dental bonding is normally completed in one visit.

Dental BondingThe procedure can help with the following:

  • Chipped teeth: One of the least expensive ways you can repair chipped teeth is by dental bonding. The composite resin is placed on the chipped area. After bonding teeth, the chip remains camouflaged, and the appearance improves.
  • Discolored teeth: If your tooth discolored, you can sometimes use teeth bonding to hide the discoloration.
  • Too small or short teeth: You can change the shape and fill spaces between teeth through bondings for teeth. If your teeth are small, the bonding of teeth will involve applying resin around them to make them large. If the tooth is short, the dentist will place the bonding at the edge of the teeth to make them appear longer.

The Process of Bonding a Tooth

This cosmetic alternative is painless and straightforward from the patient’s perspective. However, you may need anesthesia if the tooth being treated is near a nerve or the tooth has been damaged and is sensitive. The dentist then places cotton pads in your mouth to be more comfortable for him/her to work.

The next step involves selecting a bonding material (composite resin) whose color is close to your natural teeth, then applying a solution to roughen up the enamel (etching). The latter is essential because it helps the tooth bond with the composite resin. The dentist then shapes the resin putty to the desired shape before pressing and reshaping it on the tooth using specialized equipment. He/she then hardens the resin by shining a special blue UV light into the mouth.

Lastly, the dentist shapes the tooth further with finishing and polishing instruments and then blends it with the natural teeth.

Cost of Teeth Bonding

Cosmetic dental bonding costs vary based on the dentist’s expertise, how extensive the procedure is, and the location. The average cost ranges between $300 and $600. It is best to check with your insurance provider before going to your dentist. Some insurance providers consider tooth bonding as cosmetic dentistry and will not cover it.

While the dental bonding procedure is not as expensive, it is safe and presents no side effects or risks. You may experience teeth sensitivity a few days after the operation, but that will eventually fade off.

Caring for Your Teeth after Tooth Bonding

Caring for your tooth bonding is mostly about your dental hygiene and the amount of bonding done. Ensure that you care for your tooth bonding as much as you would your teeth. Since bonding material is prone to staining, avoid substances such as coffee, tea, cigarettes, and wine. Most importantly, avoid consuming any foods that may stain your teeth.

Floss and brush your teeth at least twice daily. Additionally, avoid biting your nails and schedule regular dentist appointments.

If you care for your tooth bonding efficiently, it can last for long periods, acting as a permanent procedure.
